Research to increase shelf life of coconut leaves

The success of the research would increase the value of tender leaves of coconut in craft market.

Kasargod: Central Plantation Crops Research Institute has taken up a novel research to extend the life of tender leaves of coconut tree, eying the money-spinning craft market. The success of the research would increase the value of tender leaves of coconut in craft market. Already ‘Kuruthola’ (tender leaves of coconut tree) form the significant part of the costume of ‘Theyyam’ and ‘Thira’ in north Kerala.

Foreigners who throng here to watch Theyyam have been mesmerised by the natural colour of tender coconut leaves and would collect a few but only to find that it had lost the colour within few days. “Losing its original colour is the only hindrance in it becoming a major commodity in craft market. We are trying to extend its life with the help of chemicals,” said CPCRI Director P. Chaudappa. He added that umpteen craft materials would be made out of tender leaves of coconut once they retain colour for a few more days. Besides, Kuruthola is largely being used in temple and marriage functions.

“We cannot attempt to make diverse decorative items out of Kuruthola as it would wilt within days. There is no alternative to it,” felt Mr K. Vasu Panicker, who dons make-up for Theyyam artiste. “The increase of shelf-life is our primary aim. We will seek assistance of fashion technology institutes towards this,” said Dr Chaudappa, under whom the research has been kick started. A three-day workshop in this regard was held at CPCRI Kasargod.
