Mega Oppana provides visual treat to Kannur
KANNUR: In a bid to set new Guinness World Record, a Mega Oppana, participated by 1,500 dancers, was held here on Thursday. The programme was organised in connection with Kannur City fest at Ayikkara Harbour under the joint auspices of Marhoom N. Abdullah Cultural Forum, Marhaba Cultural Society, and Kerala Folklore Akademi. The city fest concluded on Thursday.
Participants were selected irrespective of their age, caste, or religion. Many of them volunteered to take part, said the organisers. Kannur district panchayat vice-president P.P. Divya was the 'bride'. P. Prasanthan was the chief organiser of the programme, while Nasar Parassinikadavu, Mappila Kala Akademi member, was the chief trainer. "We conducted different rehearsal sessions at eight different schools in Kannur and on Wednesday for the first time all 1,500 participants rehearsed together," Mr Nasar said. A Qawwali night by Sameer Binsi and Imam Majboor along with the mega oppana provided a visual treat to the city.
Singer and music director Shahabaz Aman also performed on the occasion. Several other programs such as cookery show, city mini Olympics, mehendi competition and Sufi dance were conducted for the Kannur fest. "We are all extremely excited to host the Mega Oppana. It's such a pleasure to realise that this cultural art form is going to get a space in the Guinness Book of World Record," said Umer Farooque, a Kannur city resident.
