Golf comes to me naturally, says Kapil Dev

Former cricket star Kapil Dev, who represented India in golf last year, visited Hyderabad to support the 1st Edition Golf Fundraiser.

The Former Indian Cricket Team captain, Kapil Dev, enthralled the sports fanatics in the city by showcasing his golf skills. He visited the city on Saturday to support the 1st Annual Edition Golf Fundraiser, an initiative by the Choice Foundation. The proceeds from the event will be invested in improving the health of underprivileged children.

In his exclusive interview with Deccan Chronicle, Kapil expressed how happy he was to be a part of the event. He said, “I personally believe that it is our responsibility to participate in activities that facilitate building a stronger next generation. Health is a very significant aspect of life, and healthy people always make for a stronger country. Being part of such events has only made me wiser.”

The cricketer revealed to us about his own childhood issues. “As a child, I found it difficult to identify numbers. Any child can suffer from problems caused by issues like hypertension and malnutrition, and in many such cases, parents simply assume that their child is weak at academics. However, if parents invest the time and effort in identifying their childrens’ problems, then that will benefit the lives of our youngsters a great deal,” explained Kapil.

Almost 25 years into his retirement from cricket, Kapil represented India in golf last year. “Somehow, golf comes to me naturally. I am just a sportsperson who enjoys playing golf. And it puts my fitness levels to test, too,” Kapil shared.

For someone who has been frequenting Hyderabad for quite some time now, Kapil is amazed at how the city has transformed over the years. He said, “What I like the most about this city is its growth. I could not have imagined 30 years ago that Hyderabad would become so vibrant.”

Kapil adds that he has explored the city and has been to most places here. “Gachibowli, where I have been put up, has turned into an IT hub and a prime location in the city. 20 years ago, nobody was here. (smiles).”

On a parting note, the 1983 World Cup winning captain described Hyderabadi food as ‘yummy’. “Oh, the food over here is yummy! I am a foodie, but I have cut down on my intake now,” he quips.

Rakul Preet Singh appeared as the guest of honour at the event to extend her support to the cause. The actress, who strongly believes in supporting causes that benefit the health of children, said, “Kapil sir is a great inspiration to all of us. Playing golf with him is like a dream come true. He plays like a pro!”
