Taking selfies to the next level

Self portraits of artists date back to the 15th Century, so it is not a new concept.

Ever wondered how to take that perfect selfie when you are spoilt for choice with the plethora of selfie-specialised mobile phones available at affordable rates? To cater to the selfie craze of this generation, Parthiv Shah had come up with a workshop, titled ‘Self portrait to selfie’ on Sunday, at the State Art Gallery, Madhapur, as a part of the ongoing Krishnakriti festival of Art and Culture.

People of all ages were in attendence to brush up their skills. At the workshop, he explained how the concept of selfies emerged through a Powerpoint presentation. “People saw self portraits of artists dating back to the 15th Century in the presentation and realised that the concept is not new. Even in Indian history, there are examples of capturing oneself — the ancient paintings at Bhimbetka,” says Parthiv.

So, how would one get a perfect selfie? Parthiv had a few tricks up his sleeve. “You have to think like an artist before you click. Think about what you want to show, your perception about yourself — everything counts. The way it is captured also matters. Taking a picture with a celebrity is a way of showing off. But again, the value of the selfie changes if a celebrity clicks his own selfie,” he says.

According to him, the reason behind clicking a picture is important for a selfie and how one plays around with angles and light is, too. The background of the selfie must also tell a story. If one wants to click a flattering selfie, retouching apps and selfie sticks can be used. Angle your self properly, preferably the side, and make sure the light is right. One can use hashtags while sharing it on social media and use online cloud space for easy storage, but be careful,” says Parthiv.
