Running for a better future

16-year-old Nikitha Yadav completed a 2000 kilometres marathon to spread awareness and uphold the state's culture.

She’s not an athlete, but Nikitha conquered the 2000 kilometres marathon in the scorching heat. “I want to create a sense of self-confidence among the youth, particularly women, and tell them that they can take up anything and succeed,” says Nikitha who is pursuing her second year Intermediate from Kasturba College.

“I also want to spread awareness about the culture and practices of Telangana and bring to the fore farmers’ problems,” she says.

There were several challenges she faced during the marathon that started on 27 April and finished on 2 June. “The temperature was so hot that I was dehydrated, so I had to survive on glucose and lemon juice. At nights, I used to stay in government guest-houses, and sometimes I slept on roads and even in forests.”

Nikitha reveals that her parents initially opposed her decision. “I told my parents that a group of 10 is going on the marathon, fearing that they won’t allow me. But when a couple of days before the marathon they found out, they objected my decision. My supporter Sai Yadav convinced them.”

Nikitha is also trained in hockey, boxing, taekwondo and classical dance. Also a part of NCC, Nikitha expresses her disappointment that the government did not recognise her. “I toured the entire Andhra Pradesh cycling, covering 1500 kilometres last December, to promote women empowerment. If the government supports me, I can do better,” she says.

“I am also an International rappeler and took part in rappelling Gayatri waterfalls in Adilabad. I shall participate in the Rappelling World Cup at Katika waterfalls in Araku, later this year,” says Nikitha.
