Take it or Leave' It!

Young professionals in the city have found innovative ways to enjoy their weekly offs that don't fall on weekends.

As teens, we always got weekends off from school and even college! But as adults, many professions require employees to work during the same weekends that we took great advantage of. And to make up for it, leaves are given on unusual weekdays, when everybody else is busy working! But instead of grumbling about this, youngsters in Bengaluru have started to make the most out of these days and have even discovered some unusual perks!

One of the biggest cons of working on weekends is the set back on one’s social life. “Sunday brunches are what I miss the most. I only get an off every Tuesday, which is terrible because literally everybody is working then. But I have managed to find the silver lining. Salons usually have discounts on weekdays, as marketing strategies, so I get to pamper myself at a discounted rate!” exclaims Radhika Narain, a junior chef at a hotel on M G Road, chirpily.

While some prefer splurging on themselves, for others it’s about spending quality time alone. “I’m always surrounded by people and can barely catch a break with the night shifts and working weekends. Hospitals are almost always crowded so on my day of, I get to shop at an empty mall all by myself! After that I usually sit at a quaint café and love to unwind with a good book and a cup of piping hot coffee. I also love taking a walk down MG Road because it’s so empty!” says Suchitra Desai, a doctor, excitedly.

Not having a weekend does take some getting used to, but there are perks to getting an off when others are working. “While everybody is grumbling about Monday mornings, I get to sleep in. I am also a huge movie buff and get to watch films at a lesser price, after the weekend has passed. So in turn I’m saving more than the rest of my friends who pay double the price on weekends. Public places like parks and famous restaurants are also relatively empty so reservations don’t have to be made to get in,” says Madhuri Prakash a content curator and developer for an international firm.

Turns out, having a weekday off isn’t so bad after all!
