The noble act of healing
We have heard of several doctors who win the heart of patients with their kind nature. But there are very few doctors who treat their patients with an inner eye. Dr Rashmi is one of them. She runs Jeevaneyam, an ayurvedic centre for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The patients at Jeevaniyam undergo a traditionally enriched treatment. The centre mainly focuses on sensory integration therapy. Dr Rashmi puts her heart and soul into bringing out some changes in those kids. Jeevaniyam also focuses on occupation therapy, which helps parents get an idea about the prescribed treatment. In other words, it will help them understand whether their children would benefit from sensory integration therapy.
Dr Rashmi is doing an outstanding job at the helm of Jeevaniyam. It was her idea to set up an autism treatment centre with homely atmosphere. She is like a mother to all of those kids. Rashmi comes from a family full of doctors. She was just another doctor till she was 24, when certain incidents in her life made her adopt a completely different approach towards her patients. She understood that rather than having bystanders, every patient needs someone who can uplift them from inside.
Dr Rashmi wants to draw the attention of the parents towards this point. Most of the parents of physically-challenged kids are frustrated. The main reason is that they don’t have any time to spare for their kids. What those kids need the most is their time, the doctor says.
“The mindset towards children with ASD should change. We often isolate these kids and we do not put in any effort to bring out the hidden talents in them. We should make more effort to help them come to the mainstream of society,” she adds.
