Dalits face eviction from coastal regions: Divya Bharathi

Divya Bharathi's film Kakkoose was screened at Krithi on Thursday.

KOCHI: The activist-documentary filmmaker Divya Bharathi, of Kakkoose based on the death of two persons while engaged in a cleaning a septic tank in Madurai, says that organisations linked with the Hindutva ideology tried to prevent the screening of the film across the country. Speaking at the Krithi International Festival of Books and Authors after screening the film she said an organisation linked to the RSS had filed cases against the film.

"The police tried to disrupt the screening everywhere in Tamil Nadu", she said during a dialogue with writer-critic C.S. Venkateswaran. "Even at Kerala House in Delhi, the film could not be screened.". The director has pointed out that cases under non-bailable provisions of cyber terrorism have been registered against her. "Only organisations having affiliations with the left parties and forces supported me," she said.

"The main allegation against me was maligning the dignity of India." The filmmaker said her next venture is on the fallout of Cyclone Ockhi. She blames the failure of the Union government to provide timely information about the cyclone for death and destruction. She also alleged that there was a deliberate move to remove the Dalits from the coastal areas as part of handing over the coastal regions to the corporate forces.
