Comedian Vir Das has a fitting response for supporters of political parties
The stand up comedy scene is booming in India with more and more talented funny men gaining wider recognition especially due to the social media. But with this outreach also comes a lot of criticism, which isn’t restricted to internet trolls, since comedians like Tanmay Bhat and AIB have faced legal action for their performances.
Vir Das is one of India’s most popular comics and is also one who faces flak from different groups of people from time to time, mostly for his jokes on political figures. Now he has come out with a fitting reply to all those asking him to crack jokes on the other party, saying how comedy isn’t democratic, but democracy too shouldn’t be so comedic.
While people who raise questions on one party are labelled as supporters of any other party in a social media tradition by trolls, Vir Das’s post is a strong statement on how comedians don’t owe anything to anyone and can offer a funny take on issues in society, while it’s the job of political parties to serve people, which they don’t really do justice to.
