Wart a short!

Artist Nipin Narayanan's Arimpara is winning hearts at various short film festivals.

Nipin Narayanan shot to fame with his viral minimal art works during the infamous Perumbavoor murder case, but that was just one of his many works on the political and social happenings in the country. Bringing out the book Nostalgiathinte Pusthakam made him even more famous.

Nipin, a student of the K.R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, is making waves again now, this time, with his short film Arimpara, a drama-thriller. “Arimpara deals with how a casual conversation between two men in a bar unravels a strange connection between them. It talks about a theme very familiar to us and I think the viewers would find no difficulty in relating it to current social situation.”

Though his art works and writings are solely focused on socio-political aspects, Nipin says the short film is not intended to be of a social cause. “The theme is a very relatable and common one, but I can’t say it has got any social cause in it. I don’t believe film makers always have to do projects that point to social causes.”

The short film, made as part of their semester project, has already won awards at numerous festivals. It has been selected to IDSFFK 2018 and won two awards — best film and most popular film at the Kalopsia intercollegiate fest in Thiruvananthapuram. The film also won his the award for best director at the OBM Lohithadas Memorial Shortfilm fest in Palakkad apart from multiple awards at Inflore 18 Theatrix held at Rajagiri College for Business Studies, Kochi.

Asked about his drawings and social media writings, he says it’s the responsibility of an artist to reflect realities in his works. “Every artist plays a different and necessary part in contributing to the overall development of society. I do that through my writing and drawings. However, movies have limitations; we cannot always pack all our thoughts into a time-bound medium like film. But I believe movies should make sense. The future of our film lies with the young generation who considers it as a serious medium. After studies, I hope to write more and direct,” he shares.

Arimpara is expected to be released on social media in a few months.
