World's largest Kathakali Kite' to soar high at Bekal festival
KASARGOD: Bekal Kite festival, to be held on April 9 and 10 at Pallikkara Bekal beach park here will witness the participation of the world’s largest kite, ‘Kathakali Kite’ of the One India Kite team of Kozhikode. The first-of-its-kind kite fest to be held in North Malabar will see the participation of 10 major kites such as circle kite, pilot kite, teddy bear kite, Russian kite, rainbow kites etc besides Kathakali kite.
“There is no contest this time among the kites but it is meant for the audience who come to witness the event,” said Haroon Chithari, the media convener of the event. Kathakali Kite boasts of 110 feet length and 13.5 kg weight and cost '2 lakh. Designed by Abdulla Maliyekkal, the kite has participated in several fetes held in Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Dubai. It has been manufactured with the cloth which is used to make a parachute.
“Once it is set free to soar, the weight would be more than 1,000 kg,” said Mr Chithari. The event is being organized jointly by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Lions club of Bekal fort, Bekal Resorts Development Corporation and Pallikkara service cooperative bank. A slew of contests had been arranged for visitors.
