Watch: Emotional advert reveals the struggles of China's Leftover Women'
Most people may not know this but in China, the phrase “leftover women”, is used to describe those women who choose to remain single past the age of 25. A touching ad by a skincare brand aims to fight the stigma from this derogatory-sounding term.
The video features several unmarried Chinese women, called “sheng nu”, who share their conflicting emotions regarding their status as single women – while they are sad that they are disappointing their parents by remaining single, they also feel a sense of pride and accomplishment because of their professional success and independent lives.
The parents of these women confess the doubts they have about their daughters’ decisions and end up saying things that are particularly heartbreaking.
However, the ad ends on a positive note with the daughters sending a confident message to their parents at a ‘marriage market’ – a place where parents post pictures of their eligible children.
