Heartwarming moment when visually impaired baby sees his mother for the first time
When you were born you saw your parents the moment you opened your eyes, however not everyone is as lucky as you are.
This video is very heartwarming, when a four-month-old baby smiled in delight after seeing his mother clearly for the first time in his life.
This child, Leopold Wilbur Reppond, known as Leo, suffers from a rare disorder called oculocutaneous albinism.
According to rarediseases.org, Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of rare inherited disorders characterized by a reduction or complete lack of melanin pigment in the skin, hair and eyes.
These conditions are caused by mutations in specific genes that are necessary for the production of melanin pigment in specialized cells called melanocytes. Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA), affects one in 20,000 children and leave them with very bad vision.
Leo’s father David, 39, was so happy when his child smiled for the first time, “I had some issues holding the camera because I was crying so much. Leo looked at my wife for the first time and saw her for the first time. I was overwhelmed with emotion. It’s just very touching. You cannot anticipate how you’re going to feel when something like that happens. It was very heartwarming,” he told to the DailyMail.
Leo’s family sought treatment from Los Angeles-based pediatric ophthalmologist Kenneth Wright and got special glasses for their kid.
The glasses that Leo is wearing has normal lenses but are made up of rubber like material, which has no screws, sharp edges or hinges.
The Repponds called for a small family gathering, when they for the first time put Leo’s glasses.
In the video, the glass is placed on him an he looks confused for a while and then finally looks up to see his mother for the first time who says: 'Hi honey'.
Leo makes eyes contact with her and looks very overwhelmed and smiles back at her. He looks down trying to adjust and looks back at his mom.
“I was overwhelmed with emotion. It’s just very touching. You cannot anticipate how you’re going to feel when something like that happens,” said Leo's father David.
The video ends with Leo giggling and beaming with absolute happiness looking at his mom.
David informed that before Leo use to see with his hand because of bad eyesight, however now he has started seeing objects. He is seeing a different world altogether. Because of OCA Leo will face other challenges later in life such as being susceptible to cancers and melanoma due to his fair skin. His condition can also lead to impaired vision or sensitivity to light.
