Can we live without trusting? asks Tenzin Priyadarshi

Tenzin Priyadarshi talks about missing values'.

Tenzin Priyadarshi, director of The Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was in Hyderabad to speak at Manthan forum.

“Ethics is something that needs to be developed individually. What comes from teachers, parents and society to an individual is only a path. It’s for every individual to think of the ‘cost’ for being ethical,” said Tenzin, adding, “There was a time when the world was going through a major financial crisis.

Surprisingly, it was later found out that the root cause of this crisis was the result of ‘unethical decisions’ by the highly educated corporate leaders who kept aside personal values, business values, and organisational values and instead fulfilled their ‘greed’.

More often than not, we try to ‘validate’ our actions and assume that no matter what we are doing is correct. Some-times, people get cheated in life and therefore stop trusting anyone.

May I ask, ‘Can we lead a life without trusting anyone on this Earth?’ There is a need to generate such ‘missing values’ in our society, rather than complaining about their absence and the damage that is happening due to lack of ethical leadership,” concluded Tenzin.
