He is gifted with a rare plasma composition in his blood that can be used to treat Rhesus disease.

James Harrison is popularly known as the ‘Man with the Golden Arm’ and for good reason too. He has saved the lives of over 2 million unborn babies by donating his blood. Harrison is gifted with a rare plasma composition in his blood that can be used to treat Rhesus disease.

In case you don’t know, rhesus is a condition in which a pregnant woman’s blood attacks her unborn baby’s blood cells. What’s special about Harrison’s blood is that it contains the antibody that protects them. He was inspired to regularly donate blood after being a recipient of around 13 litres of donated blood himself during a surgery at the age of 14.

Amazingly, Harrison can donate blood in a single 40-minute sitting that is enough to save thousands of lives. He even has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for donating blood up to a thousand times.
