The ex files

Recently Prince William attended the wedding of his ex girlfriend Blake, while his wife Kate Middleton was MIA.

So you were in a relationship with someone and while it was beautiful when it lasted, things sadly (or not) ended. Years later, you end up getting a message from the said ex, inviting you to his or her wedding. What do you do?

If you had to take the example of Prince William, who recently attended the wedding of his former girlfriend Blake, then you should probably go to the wedding of your ex. But, is that the right thing to do? Maybe, maybe not.
Rukshana Eisa, grooming and etiquette expert believes there are a few things you need to keep in mind before RSVP-ing that invite.

“It all depends on the relationship that you shared with the ex. For instance, if you ended things on a positive note and there hasn't been any bad blood between the two of you, then you can go ahead. But if things ended badly, it would be in your best interest to stay away from the wedding,” she says. For those doing the inviting, here are some dos and don’ts. She says. “You don’t necessarily have to invite your ex’s partner if you don’t know them. Your relationship was with your ex.” It is up to the ex whether he or she wants to bring their current partner or not.

However, Rukshana points out that in this equation, both the person inviting and the invitee need to take into consideration their partner’s feelings. She says, “Both parties need to discuss this with their partners first. If you are inviting your ex, you need to talk about it with your partner and only if they are comfortable with the idea, should you go ahead. The same holds true for the one who has been invited. You can’t afford to risk upsetting your partner because of this.

They need to be comfortable with the invite. Also, don’t pay too much attention to your ex at the wedding. By that I mean, treating them like any other guest will be fine. There is no need to go all out and make sure that they are fine. Remember, it is your partner that is more important here.”
