Born to a family of finance and accounts professionals, city-based artist Reshmi Chandrashekhar is anything but a chip off the old block — after Curiosity Kills The Cat, her maiden customised art venture has taken off with gusto, the young artist is prepping herself up for an exciting road ahead…
‘Sometimes, it is the wrong choices that lead to the right ones,’ surmises Reshmi, revealing how the venture was the result of a measly day job. My new venture began when I was at a terribly boring job — I’d pen down little scribbles with cats hidden in them, and send it across as a puzzle to my friends.” She goes on to add, “The scribbles then became doodles about things I liked — music, movies, pop culture references, always with a cat hidden somewhere in the art.
The art got fairly popular amongst my friends, so an official Facebook page followed suit,” quips the 24-year-old artist, who is armed with a degree in Architecture from R V College of Engineering, Bengaluru. Reshmi recently tied up with The Late Night Show With Devansh Patel, where her art was gifted to a host of B-town a listers actors .
“My works were gifted Vir Das, Katrina Kaif, Sonam Kapoor, Sunny Leone and a couple of others who came to the show. I’ve also done personalised artwork for Farhan Akhtar and Ranveer Singh,”
Divulging a bit about her forthcoming project, she talks about working on a personalised artwork for All India Bakchod, “The theme revolves around ‘What being in AIB must be like’. It’s a lot of mockery, sarcasm and unapologetic humour, which is in tandem with the concept of the show” she remarks with a chuckle.
Quite like most creative twenty-somethings, Reshmi opines how music’s influence looms large over her work. “A lot of my art draws inspiration from music- I do pop culture inspired artwork, which is mainly driven by musical influences. I love working with musicians and artists for album art/ gig art with a streak of an experimental style.”
While it may seem like the youngster’s got her hands full, she asserts that she often takes time off to indulge in other interests, “I’m a big sucker for live music, so I try catching most gigs that happen in the city. Apart from that, I like experimenting with art —music, dance, design, writing and dabbling around with photo edits. Most of my free time is divided between this, and taking my brat of a dog Bulki on long walks!”
Unfazed by the future, Reshmi is far from being on edge. “I’d love to find a mid-ground between my venture and architecture as both these fields are so interdisciplinary. But future plan #1 is designing album art for my favourite band ‘Foals’.
A close second is designing my website and running an e-commerce store from my studio – there’s no dearth for the things you can do with design, so let’s see where this goes!” signs off the rather excited youngster with her fingers crossed.
