Niqab wearing women mock Saudi's patriarchal society, driving laws in viral video
An Arabic music video starring women in niqabs over colourful outfits mocking men and the patriarchy in general has been making waves across the world especially in Saudi Arabia. The song titled Hwages, which means ‘concerns’, has been both lauded and heavily criticised by Saudis on social media.
The video makes fun of the state’s controversial laws like the ban on women from driving by showing a young boy driving a car full of women. One can also see veiled women ride bumper cars, play basketball and roller-skate while singing about the oppression that they face in the country. The lyrics of the song are about the girls wishing that men would cease to exist as they cause women to have ‘mental illnesses’.
Even a cut-out of US President-elect Donald Trump makes an appearance behind a podium in a makeshift White House with a sign that reads, “House of Men”. This was probably done to take a swipe at him for his frequent sexist remarks made in public.
