For the love of the monuments!

The dance performance was choreographed by well-known Kuchipudi dancer Lalitha Sindhuri.

While Hyderabad is known to have a rich and beautiful cultural history, we see that many monument from the Qutub Shahi era are neglected and losing their sheen. In an attempt to revive the city’s ancient legacy, the US Consulate General in Hyderabad organised a Kuchipudi dance performance at Taramati Baradari on Friday.

The dance performance was choreographed by well-known Kuchipudi dancer Lalitha Sindhuri. “Through our performance we narrated the stories of king Abdullah Qutub Shah’s courtesans Taramati and Premamati, who were so influential during their times that they were not only treated like the members of the royal family, but are also buried along with them.

I wanted to have a blend of both Telugu and Urdu culture that prevailed at that time. So along with Shabdam a dance piece from Kuchipudi we also performed on Urdu ghazals,” reveals Lalitha.

The event marked a new Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) grant to fund preservation work at the Qutub Shahi tombs complex. Many prominent people from the city including, Anjani Kumar, IPS, Commissioner of Police, BVR Mohan Reddy, Honourary Consul General of Germany, Suresh Chukkapalli, Honorary Consul General of South Korea and Dr Sunitha Krishnan, Chief Functionary, Prajwala attended the event.
