Stream games with 'Mixer'

Microsoft's Mixer create app also lets users join other streams.

Mixer, the game streaming service that Microsoft acquired last year, has launched its Mixer Create app on iOS and Android this week, allowing gamers to stream mobile games. The Mixer Create app was released on Thursday on the eve of the annual PAX West gaming convention in Seattle.

The launch comes shortly after rival Twitch debuted an updated streaming app of its own, which included the ability to live stream from mobile devices to their channels.

Mixer Create works on Android with all games, but is limited on iOS. The company states that on iPhone, select games that have enabled Apple’s Replay Kit functionality will work on the feature. Not every iOS game will work, but titles such as Star Trek Timelines, Goat Simulator, Into the Dead, and Modern Combat 5: Blackout will be supported.

In a blog post announcing the news, the company stated, “Going on an adventure? Waiting in line for the latest new game? With Mixer Create you can now go live from anywhere and share your experiences with your community in real-time.”

Mixer has introduced features such as low-latency streaming and other ways for viewers to interact with games as they’re streamed.

The app can also be used for co-streaming, which allows up to four streamers to combine their streams into a single viewing experience, Microsoft said in its announcement.

The new app comes with an invitations feature, which is partially functional for now. Users can accept or reject the pop-up co-stream invites. However, in a few months, users will be able to send out these co-stream invites as well.

Gamers/users can also use the app for non-gaming related purposes such as vlogging through a feature that lets them ‘go live’ at any time to initiate a real-time broadcast to their fans.

Mixer was known as Beam before Microsoft acquired it. It was co-founded by Matt Salsamendi, who was then 18 years old. He continues to lead the product team.
