Flying in and out of golden cage

Through her book she wishes to transform the lives of women who desire more in their lives.

Married at the age of 18, Puja Puneet may have been destined to be confined in a limited space that is defined by the patriarchal structure of Indian society. Puja Puneet had planned to study law, but marriage at a young age left her rudderless. The burning aspiration within her for a more fulfilling existence led her to study under the best in the self help industry. Having trained under Jack Canfield, life coach Puja Puneet recently launched her first book ‘Unlocking the Golden Cage’, in presence of prominent lawyer Harish Salve and Jack Canfield, the name behind the ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ brand. Through her book she wishes to transform the lives of women who desire more in their lives.

In an upfront conversation, the author says that ‘Unlocking the Golden Cage’ is a step by step manual for the married Indian woman on how to recognise the gilded cage in which she’s living, and how to break free from it to live a life she loves. “I am part of this demographic myself and therefore I am completely in tune with their circumstances and challenges at the deepest level. I also have the most education of any life coach in India, and this book presents all. I’ve learned in a methodical way that addresses the plight of modern Indian wife and daughter-in-law.”

She says she stole the title from her mom. “My mom once narrated to me this story about how she feels she is caged. During the day, the cage door is open for her to fly over Amazon but she must return to her king. She always thought she had to choose between this protected life being provided by the king against freedom. But the feeling of insecurity of being on her own, her big transformation happened when she felt like she could enjoy the best of both worlds and she called it a bridge. I didn’t keep the name ‘break your cage’, but rather just unlock as I feel that the smartest women are those who can have a balance. The caging is a metaphor for the limits the society or family puts on us and the book helps us to recognise the limitations and then how to overcome them”.’’
