Rare turn of events causes twins to be born a year apart from each other

Identical twins are known to be born at a rate of almost four per 1000 births across the globe but few of these births turn out to be special. While siblings in such cases are usually born together, can one of them be delivered in a different year altogether?

Joaquin and Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros were supposed to be born on January 27, 2018, but their mother went into labour prematurely on the New Years Eve. This twist of fate meant that both of them arrived in the world 20 minutes apart but in different years.

The siblings were delivered naturally but on either side of midnight as Joaquin arrived on 11:58 pm on December 31, 2017 followed by his twin sister Aitana at 12: 16 am on January 01, 2018. While the duo will share everything for life including genes, their date as well as year of birth will remain different.

While such cases are very rare, last year four such twin births were recorded in the US.
