Fun with umbrella

Funbrella 2017 is a unique umbrella painting competition for children to boost their creativity and persuade them to observe nature.

Monsoon is a time for kids to rejoice.Though they prefer to get soaked in rain, umbrellas are their favourite as well. Different sizes, Shapes, colours and patterns always attract children and in Kerala, school students look forward for their classes to reopen to get their brand new umbrellas as the academic year starts with monsoons.

What if kids could make their umbrellas look the way they prefer it to be? Funbrella is an opportunity to paint umbrellas, win prizes and proudly carry their unique creation to the school for rest of the year, grabbing some envious looks.

“The theme for the competition is ‘Monsoon of Kerala’ and the main reason why we thought of selecting this as the topic is because it is the rainy season and we are sure that children who are good observers will definitely come up with very interesting and live patterns that will do justice to the theme,” says Sandhya who is the coordinator of the event.

This is the third season of the competition and is only for high school students. “The huge number of participants and the enquiry that we received in the previous seasons persuaded us to organise the third season as well. We have collaborated with many schools in the city and the school authorities are also encouraging the students interested in painting to take part in the competition. So far we have received around 160 registrations. Parents who are getting to know about Funbrella are also calling up to get their kid's name registered,” adds Sandhya.

The first prize winner will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and the second prize winner will get prize money of Rs 10,000. In addition to this, five consolation prizes will also be given to the other best painted umbrellas.

“The participants will be provided white umbrellas and fabric paints and the rest depend on their creativity. They just have to bring the painting brush and palett.

“They have to utilise the entire surface of the umbrella and paint it according to their wish within two hours, which is the time limit fixed for the competition,” she added

Sandhya says that Funbrella is different from other painting competitions as it is giving an opportunity to the children to look around them, understand the theme and then use their creativity rather than imagining things and painting it on paper.
