Crossing the street while using your phone costs $100 in this California town
Using your phone to text or listen to music while crossing the street will cost you big in a small California town, the Daily Mail reported.
Montclair, California, has banned pedestrians from using their devices for their own safety.
"The youth admit that they are distracted by their cell phones," City Manager Edward Starr explained to the Los Angeles Times. "This has turned out to be a reminder for them that their lives are on the line," he said.
First time offenders will be a given a warning, but if you do it again, you will be fined a $100. The fines could even go up to $500.
However, in case of emergency residents are allowed to call the police or emergency crews.
Pedestrian related vehicle accidents have accounted for 15% of related fatalities, the report revealed. Traffic collisions cost 5,987 deaths, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.
