The monsoon season is no less than a festival and is celebrated beautifully across Kerala. Monsoon is a ray of hope for the farmers. It is a promise of prosperity as the season provides necessary conditions for healthy crop production. For children it is the season of rainbows and paper boats. Monsoon, therefore, is not just a season but a synonym of celebration, hope and adventure.

Kerala turns all the more gorgeous during the monsoons. Bathed in sparkling raindrops, brimming rivers and beautiful hill stations, the state transforms into a paradise during the monsoon. The onset of the monsoon over Kerala marks the beginning of the four-month southwest monsoon season in India.

Kerala enjoys two monsoon seasons: the southwest monsoon from June to August and the northeast monsoon from October to November. The southwest monsoon, which is also called as Edavappathy, is the main rainy season in Kerala. It is the time when the cool breeze from south-west and refreshing showers replace the scorching Sun. The rivers are full of water and the entire region gets covered with lush greenery. The average maximum temperature during the season is 30°C and the minimum temperature is around 20°C. This season ends by mid August.

Onam is also a celebration of the harvest season in Kerala. After the rainy season, Chingam comes with the hope of a good harvest and prosperity.

Monsoon season returns to Kerala with heavy downpours in October. It is known as the north east monsoon or Thulavarsham. During this period, the average maximum temperature is 35°C and the average minimum temperature is around 28°C. It lasts until the beginning of December.
