A trek in the rain? The ghats are waiting
Mangaluru: Thick clouds- sometimes dark, sometimes white- covering the hills and valleys, roaring waterfalls and panoramic mountains covered with greenery in the Western Ghats are the latest destination for ‘Monsoon Trekking.’
Many trekkers, especially from places like Bengaluru and North Karnataka districts love to come to the Western Ghats to enjoy the rains and also the scenery in the region.
Despite leeches, slippery hills and heavy rains, these people come to the Ghats for trekking. Places like Sarvajnapeetha- Chitramoola valley near Kollur, Ammedikallu valley, Durgadagandi falls, Kudumari falls, Malali falls and Belkal Teertha falls are some of the most sought after destinations for monsoon trekking. People carry their sophisticated cameras to click photos and relive the experience after they return home.
“Western Ghats wear a marvelous look during the monsoon especially between June and October. This is the time when Monsoon Trekking is popular. The number of trekkers is not as high as summer trekking as not many would venture to Western Ghats during monsoon as it is filled with leeches and slippery hills. But there are many who concentrate on Monsoon trekking as it is an experience by itself,” Sahyadri Sanchaya convener Dinesh Holla told Deccan Chronicle. Holla and his team organize regular trekking and environment protection activities in the Western Ghats.
