A castle on the cliff

Andrew Paul, an artist and founder of Andy's Abstracts shares his experience at Tintagel Castle in North Cornwall, in the United Kingdom.

Built half on the mainland and half on a jagged headland projecting into the Cornish sea, Tintagel Castle is one of the most spectacular historic sites in Britain. Its association with King Arthur makes it also one of the most famous. Tintagel is a civil parish and village situated on the Atlantic coast of Cornwall.

The site is so mesmerising and beautiful. It literally transports you into a different world. The weather was cold and breezy, and one is able to hear the thrashing of the ocean and the waves crashing into the rocks.

Tintagel is a popular tourist spot. The village folk are friendly, and always have a smile on their lips. There is a museum which shows the history and heritage of the place, and there are places where you can shop for vintage jewellery and ancient tapestry. There are cafes where you get delicious Cornwall pastry, which is a traditional dish of the area.

Set high on the rugged North Cornwall coast, Tintagel has dramatic sea views, both from the castle ruins on the headland and the island. There are also beautiful coastal walking paths passing close to Tintagel’s abandoned slate quarries, perched on the cliff edge.

Tintagel Island is a must do here. One can climb 148 steps to the Island and pass through the wooden door into what was the Great Hall built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall.
