The other side of Bangkok!

Beauty entrepreneur and make-up artist Charu GR lets us in on how to satiate one's wanderlust on a shoestring budget in the land of ornate shrines...

1 While Bangkok is touted as a buzzing town, which never sleeps, I chose to digress from the usual; and check -in to a countryside hotel which was on the riverside of Chao Phraya River. This was strategically constructed for the guests to get an aerial view of the grand palaces that this city boasts of - unlike popular lounges which are situated the bustling streets and bars.

2 I believe the best way to discover a city, is by foot. And, at best, by its local mode of transport. We went on the Tuk Tuk, and feasted our eyes on the best picks suggested by the locals - Wat Phao temple and Wat Arun temple. There city is dotted with huge statues of reclining buddhas, so if you’re looking for those quintessential Insta vacay pictures, stop by to click!

3 The local food is another highlight. But again, it’s best suggested to try the signature Bangkok jasmine rice, and sticky rice with mango pulp doused in coconut milk. Gai/Moo and Khao pad’s are the best and copiously available. For some reason, I believe the local vendors did a great job.

4 For those with a love for flora, the fresh Flower Market Old City - Rattanakosin (near Wat Pho) is a must visit. I like how a lot of local youngsters were taking keen interest on gardening and volunteering to teach tourists a tip or two about sowing exotic flowers the right way.

5 Last but not the least, Bangkok is a haven for shoppers. It’s also a great place to get cute handcrafts, which are made by small-scale entrepreneurs. Shopping from them is considered to help a growing industry, and I think it’s a great way to show you care about helping small local business to grow.
