Karnataka: Not for Dasara! This stage a real eyesore for tourists

Some district officers believe the use of incandescent light bulbs to illuminate the palace may also be to blame.

Bengaluru: Ever since the Mysuru Palace Board refused to allow cultural performances inside the Durbar Hall during the 10-day Dasara celebrations, they have been held on a stage built temporarily outside the palace. If the idea was to entertain people against the backdrop of the illuminated palace, it has failed miserably as the stage is more of an eyesore , mainly because of the artificial background it uses as well.

The authorities came up with two designs for the stage this year. One featuring the Jaganmohan Palace and the Virupaksha Temple of Hampi in the background and the other , the Vijaynagar kingdom. PWD Minister, Dr H C Mahadevappa and Co-operation Minister, H S Mahadevaprasad preferred to go with the Jaganmohan Palace, according to director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, K A Dayanand.

While the choice may have been right, the execution has left a lot to be desired as the paint used does not blend with the illuminated palace against which the stage is set.

"I don’t think it is ugly. It blends with the illuminated palace. Others may feel differently. In fact, there was similar criticism when we designed the stage based on the palace Durbar Hall last time," Mr Dayanand contended.
