Telugu people don't travel much, reveals study

Only 8 per cent took trips outside two states.

Hyderabad: The Telugu people are not much into travelling outside the two states for leisure, recreation or holidaying. This particular fact was recently revealed in the Key Indicators in Domestic Tourism in India 2014-15 report of the NSSO.

From AP and Telangana, only 8.1 per cent people took overnight trips outside the state in 2014-15 for holidaying, leisure, recreation, medical or shopping purposes. The figure is second lowest in the country after Odisha with 7.5 per cent, and is dwarfed by the highest figure of 38 per cent of Haryana.

In 2014-15, there were 1,30,600 leisure trips from urban AP and 2,02,700 from urban Telangana.

However overnight trips for social, religious, business and medical purposes are much higher in both states as compared to leisure. There were 1,44,200 overnight trips for religious and 14,08,400 for social purposes made in AP in just a 30-day period. The figures were 6,54,000 for social and 53,100 for religious purposes in Telangana in 30 days.

The figures for overnight leisure trips by people from urban areas of AP and Telangana in a one-year period are the lowest in South India and one of the lowest in country, compared to 21,40,900 trips from Maharashtra.

Urbanites from AP and Telangana do not just make fewer trips outside the state for leisure, but also spend much less than people from most of the other states. While urbanites from AP spend Rs 5,396 on average on such trips, those from Telangana spend Rs 9,777. Compared to this those from urban areas in West Bengal spend Rs 14,349.

AP and Telangana however, score highest when it comes to percentage of single woman travellers making overnight trips for leisure, health and shopping. It is 53 per cent for AP and 60 per cent for Telangana.

Meanwhile AP and Telangana, known for their pilgrimage sites (especially AP), received the second highest number of visitors in a 30-day period from other states for business, social, religious and education purposes at 8,68,100, after Uttar Pradesh, which received 12,72,400.
