A natural tendency to be attracted towards individuals in their 40s and 50s might qualify a person as a mesophile, according to research. The word was first used by a Canadian forensic psychologist and sexologist to describe people who are attracted to middle-aged men and women.

The term ‘mesophilia’ comes from the Greek root word mesos which means intermediate. Michael C. Seto, the forensic research director at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, wrote in an article in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour that the reason why mesophilia has received little research attention is because it does not result in any harmful consequences.

According to Seto’s theory, people who have a deep-seated attraction to middle-aged partners are mesophiles. At the same time, they can still be attracted to people from other age ranges. He coined this definition while researching how pedophilia can be considered a type of sexual orientation for a specific age group.

He insists that sexual orientation is more than just about gender. He also went on to state that most people fall under the teleiophilic category which means that they prefer sexually mature but pre-middle-age adults.
