With World Aids Day just around the corner (December 1st), it has become even more imperative to facilitate open conversations about safe sex. Although many sexually active youngsters discuss sex via text messaging, there isn’t really a clear-cut emoji that describes safe sex. Durex, a leading condom manufacturer, did come up with a special condom emoji for this purpose but was reportedly rebuffed by Unicode.
However this did not deter Durex from its campaign to promote frank discussions about safe sex between individuals. So the company held a worldwide poll to ask people which existing emoji they felt best captures the idea of safe sex.
The Open Umbrella with Raindrops emerged as the winner among the hundreds of emojis that tech-savvy folk use during sexting as the perfect stand-in for a proper condom emoji, according to The Drum.
