Together in hope and disappointment

MP Renuka Chowdary and her best friend Bhavani Chandrashekar share the secret of their friendship.

MP Renuka Chowdary and her friend Bhavani, a special educator and student counsellor, have maintained their friendship since 1973.

“It’s as if I have known her all my life. She has been a part of my childhood, my growing years and now as mothers and grandmothers our journey continues,” says Renuka. Bhavani adds, “Renu (as she calls her) used to be my neighbour in the Air Force colony, Bengaluru and it was more like ‘awe’ at first sight.”

Their unconditional love for each other, despite challenges, differences in personalities, lifestyles and opinion, makes their bond strong. “We shared responsibilities together. We were together in hope and disappointment. We shared our notes,” recalls Renuka. Adds Bhavani, “She was unlike any person I had ever met. Her infectious laughter, remarkable wit and sheer presence are something which is inbuilt.”

So what has kept their friendship strong even after so many years? “When we were getting married, we took a pledge that no matter what, we would be there for each other, strengthening the bond,” reveals the MP. The educator explains, “Renu has held my hand through the lows and highs of my life. I treasure our totally non-judgmental, sometimes sentimental, but always fun friendship.”

Renuka then talks about their days from college. “We were a gang of four — one guy and three women. When I got into trouble with college politics, they were my rock. They stood by me then and they stand by me now. No one judges anyone here.” Their friendship has survived both time and distance.

“Renu used to take me as her subject for the psychology exams. One vivid memory I have is when I gave all the opposite answers and Renu looked at me and said ‘can’t you be normal?’ That was funny,” Bhavani says.

They also don’t let a few time zones get in the way of being a part of each other’s daily lives. “There is nothing to balance. My children and family are integrated into this and it is intuitive for us to know when we need to back off from family scenes. I value relationships and would be devastated if I forgot any birthdays, anniversaries or other important events. But friends are there to remind me always,” says Renuka.
