It's complicated: Managing the hubby's mom

Nothing is worse than being made to feel uncomfortable by someone who spends all her time to prove how much better her child can do

How are you supposed to deal with the other woman a.k.a. the mother of your husband or partner? Poor Disha Patani, according to grapevine, is said to be having a terrible time with actor boyfriend Tiger Shroff’s mother who is hell-bent on breaking them up. One would think someone like Ayesha, who has a bohemian vibe to her, would be easy to deal with. Apparently not. The list of mothers who have worn their dislike on their sleeve for their son’s other half is endless. Neetu Singh was never a fan of Katrina Kaif. Jaya Bachchan according to gossip has not really warmed up to Aishwarya Rai.

Even a tough cookie like Maneka Gandhi has horror tales to tell about Indira Gandhi. Nothing is worse than being made to feel uncomfortable in your new home or even having to put up constantly with someone who is spending her every waking moment trying to prove how much better her child can do. So, how do you handle the situation? In Ash’s case she did refer to Rekha, the alleged worst kind of other woman in Jaya’s life, as “ma” at a public event. The message was clear... don’t mess with me. Many grin and bear it while secretly picturing their nemesis dead, hoping things would change. A few retaliate and are equally nasty, others simply move on to newer pastures (different partners with bearable mothers).

The truly clever ones are those who believe that they have found their partner and bide their time to get back. What the poor mothers don’t realise is that while their sons may claim they are not able to function without, life with just mummy for company is a miserable thought. You do need a wifey or a girlfriend in the long run and can’t have mummy ruin your love life all the time. Okay, she is entitled to dislike a few and is allowed to take her time to warm up, but to hate every girl or the one who makes her son happy is not on.

There comes a time when the grandkids start realising how nasty granny is to mummy. As the relationship grows the son begins to realise his mother is unreasonable and how his wife is the angel (even though he may not admit it). Unless the guy is financially dependent on his parents, there will come a time in life when suddenly Mummyji realises that she has just lost out on her son who has realised he is happy with seeing less of her.
