Views on live-in ties sought

The Commission has sought views and suggestion from the people in next two months.

Jaipur: Can a man be allowed to arbitrarily end ties with his partner in a live-in relationship? Does money compensate woman’s rights and honour in such an eventuality?

These are some of the pertinent questions raised by Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission which has sought public opinion on the matter. “I believe that this was an important issue affecting the society and opportunity should be given to the people to air their suggestions and opinions on the issue,” said Justice Prakash Tatia, the chairperson.

The chairperson said much was required to be done in the direction to safeguard the interests and rights of women and their children in live-in relationship. He informed that the Commission has registered one case by taking suo moto cognizance considering it to be a “matter of humanity”.

The Commission wants to know whether a man can voluntarily walk out of a relationship if the differences between the couple reach a breaking point. And whether such an arrangement should be allowed or not?.

The panel also wants views and opinions of the people on role of police in such an eventuality and also what to do if one of the partners enters into another relationship.

The Commission said based on its experience in dealing with many such cases, it has been constrained to raise a few grey areas left by the apex court. The SC has differentiated between ‘marriage’ and ‘marriage-like relations’.

The Commission has sought views and suggestion from the people in next two months. The report thus prepared will be submitted to the Centre.
