Gen Z redefining relationship rules, break traditional roles: Report

Hyderabad: The Generation Z (Gen Z) population is doing away with traditional rules of companionship, challenging gender roles, prioritising common values and seeking emotional maturity among their partners, a study found.

As many as 33 per cent emphasised compatibility, 31 per cent trends and 27 per cent expected social media presence from potential companions, as per the ‘Love Unfiltered’ study undertaken by Bumble, a dating app, in Mumbai.

Pop culture was found to be a major influence, as evidenced by 21 per cent finding political misalignment a red flag and 19 per cent seeking LGBTQAI+ allyship.

Another interesting find was that 29 per cent of the app users did not feel pressured to get married on a set timeline, while tolerance for toxic behaviour was also reported to be decreasing among women.

Samarpita Samaddar, India communications director at Bumble, said that Gen Z is rewriting the dating rules. “It’s interesting that they are breaking free from old norms, and being refreshingly honest about their romantic pursuits. They're not staying silent instead, they're expressing their beliefs and challenging old-fashioned dating norms. Bumble empowers people to date at their own pace and on their own terms. You can showcase your lifestyle, values, and social causes like environmentalism, human rights, and feminism,” she said.
