Eureka! Bengaluru students turn into green warriors
Bengaluru: The ever-increasing pollution is one of the biggest challenges faced by residents in Bengaluru. Tens of student scientists from schools all over the city tried to find a solution to this problem through their innovations at India’s first ever Stem Club for kids launched by Eureka -- a hands-on Science Education provider.
The workshop was conducted at the Prikrama Centre for Learning in the city and their main theme was “Pollution in the Neighbourhood”.
Students who participated in the workshop, worked on a real-time basis which was aimed to measure the exact amount of pollution in their neighbourhood.
Rishikesh, a 6th standard boy from a poor family studying in Eureka school, has done research on light pollution.
He told Deccan Chronicle, “I live in a city where light is everywhere, but I don't like too much of light, so I started doing research on it. Everyone has given me their full support," he said.
Varun, a student of DPS of the city, is suffering from Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI). While doing research on the disease, he found out that it is caused due to air pollution mainly from gases like SO2 and NO2. So he decided to analyze all the pollutants present in the air around his neighbourhood. He has now developed a device that can detect carbon-monoxide present in the air.
Sai Rahul Chowdhary and Girish come from a remote village in Sindhanur. The students of the Daffodils Concept School, Sindhanur, realised that the increase in the use of fertilizers and chemicals in their agricultural lands were causing a decrease in aquatic life and a depletion of water bodies, so they came up with a cost effective ‘Colorimeter’ which detects the presence of ‘Nitrates’ and ‘Phosphates’ in water which are the major causes of water pollution.
The selected students will be groomed over the next three years by a core team to help them excel at the international level.
