Adopting a pet can be fun
A pet is not merely an animal but a companion for many. Naffes Ahmed, an animal lover, in collaboration with Kris Kringles plans to conduct a pet adoption drive, on December 1 and 2 at YMCA, Royapettah Convention centre.
The adoption drive will be conducted along with Christmas sale of cakes, dress, street food, designer clothes, handicrafts, jewellery and other attractions.
“We are trying to convey the idea that a pet dog or cat should get a good home to live in and must be disease free. We make sure that dogs or cats up for adoption are healthy by giving them proper treatment and vaccination to make them disease free and infection free before adoption.” says Naffes Ahmed.
The pet dogs or cats, abandoned by owners or straddled ones are treated and taken care of and put out for adoption. About 15 straddled ones are available for free adoption. The adoption procedures include completing an application form, research on finding the best home for the pet and verifying the address of the adopter. Besides, a picture of the adopter is taken along with the pet puppy or kitten at the time of adoption. The adopters are also provided with sample pet food along with multivitamins and snacks for the pet.
Organisers also remind them about the vaccination schedules and treatment patterns regularly. Calls are made after adoption to ensure that the pets are safe. Those who adopt have to make sure the pet is taken for regular check-ups and have to send a picture of the pet every month.
“We help them in case of emergencies and connect them to the nearest veterinary hospitals and also give them the details of nearest pet lovers and we provide all other help required. Regular follow-ups are also done” says Naffes. All the pets are given basic training.
While foreign pets are very expensive to maintain because of their diet and healthcare, Indian dogs can adjust in any situation and can feed on homely food. There is a general misconception that it’s better to buy pets than adopt one. But many pets sold to pet stores come from dog or cat farms where they are kept in pathetic conditions, confined in crates and piled upon each other. These pets are fed inadequate diets and given contaminated water, and are provided with little or no veterinary care. The greatest benefit in adopting over buying a pet is that you save a life and you get all details and records and follow-ups ensure a good experience.
