Chennai: 26 transplanted trees survive sweltering heat
Chennai: A total of 26 trees transplanted by a real estate agency from their housing lands in Maduravoyal to the neighbouring open space reserve (OSR) land are showing signs of survival. The trees, which include a 80-year-old peepal, date palm, neem and jackfruit trees, were transplanted a month ago to promote greenery in the city.
Explaining the procedure, B. Elango, the horticulturist who took up the transplantation work, said, “Having trimmed the branches, we applied a less dosage fungicide to help them withstand the harsh summer temperatures. We have created a root ball in the transplanted area and treated with humic acid.” The pit is also treated with pest free chemicals, to ensure that it is disease free. “We had draped the trees with the paddy straw ropes to help them retain the moisture. Normally, the branches of the trees grow 1 to 2 inches a month. But these trees have shown a growth of 2 feet,” Elango said. The group has six trees which are about 80-years-old and the rest of them are at least 40-years-old.
