Rescued Sambar deer falls into 30-ft well, dies
POLLACHI: Sambar deer dies after being saved near Pollachi Forest officials on Saturday rescued and released a male sambar deer that fell into a well in a human habitat in Anamalai Tiger reserve (ATR) near Pollachi.
But unfortunately, the deer fell into another 30-ft open well, three km away from the area and died.
According to Pollachi FRO Kasilingam, the male deer, aged estimated to be more than five years, had entered Somandhurai Chithoor village close to the reserve forest late on Friday night.
The deer apparently lost its way while moving in search of water in the dark and fell into the 50 foot depth open well.
The well had around 10 feet of water and local people and farmers alerted Senthil Kumar the owner of the farmland about the animal after finding it inside the well on Saturday morning.
On receiving information from Senthil, Forest department staff rushed to the spot and began rescue operations.
As the animal’s size was too big, repeated efforts taken to bring the deer out of the well did not succeed.
The water from the well was then pumped out using two heavy duty motors, a temporary inclined ramp path was put up with help of poclain on the side walls of the well, thus creating a path for the animal to walk out.
After five hours of struggle, the animal was brought out by a team of Forest department staffs and given first aid by veterinary doctors.
The officials, after assessing the health condition the deer released it into the forest near Aliyar in Pollachi forest range on Saturday post-noon, only for the animal to meet its death in another nearby well.
