Tamil Nadu: Deforestration weakens lake bunds

S. Bhargavi, a volunteer of Nizhal told DC that the walk would help residents to avoid chopping off endangered trees.

Chennai: Cyclone Vardah destroyed the city’s green cover leading to untold repercussion. The loss of native tree species near water bodies has weakened bunds of prominent lakes, cry environmentalists.

Adambakkam lake and Chitlapakkam lake are the striking examples for the described phenomenon, sending the messages of quick action to be taken. An environmental organisation called Nizhal is conducting tree walks in the city to sensitise the general public about the significance of trees.

The tree walk would be conducted in Chitlapakkam and Harrington Road to create awareness to residents about native trees. S. Bhargavi, a volunteer of Nizhal told DC that the walk would help residents to avoid chopping off endangered trees. “Trees belonging to Neer Nochi variety are deep rooted and prevent soil erosion,” she said.

The lake bunds, which play a role in water storage, are highly exploited, as they are often used as roadways. “Many important herbs like Wild Yam are missing, as bunds are used for transportation. Their strength is reduced as heavy vehicles ply on them,” D. Narasimhan, professor and head, school of liberal arts and science, Transdisciplinary University, Bangalore said.

Residents welcome the initiatives as they feel that the walk would be a learning experience for many. L. Sundararaman, a Chitlapakkam resident said: “It is important for the younger generation to know the importance of native tree varieties.”
