Tamil Nadu: Karur records 40 degrees Celsius

Many districts are on verge of touching 40-degree line as Salem and Vellore noted the maximum temperatures of 39.5 and 38.7 degrees.

Chennai: In a first in this summer season, interior Tamil Nadu district, Karur recorded 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Though the record has created panic among the residents of an early start of a peak summer, weather experts state that the condition is ‘completely normal’.

Many districts are on the verge of touching the 40-degree line as Salem and Vellore noted the maximum temperatures of 39.5 and 38.7 degrees. “We have not touched the peak yet, as there is an upper air circulation near Lakshwadeep.

The noted temperatures are not above the normal temperatures for the season,” said S. Balachandran, director of the Regional Meteorological Centre.

“We had touched the 40 degree mark at the start of March last year. Thanks to the brief spells in March, we did not witness the peak temperature yet,” said weather blogger Bhaskaran Shivaraman.
