The week-long event with take place in mid November and while the situation is temporary, it will have long-term benefits on the pups.

Twenty lucky rescue dogs have been picked to be part of the no-kill LifeLine Animal Project's inaugural Home for the Pawlidays program.

Through this initiative lucky pups get to break free from the confines of their little cages and be special guests in people's homes for Thanksgiving.

Spokerperson Karen Hirsch told TODAY, "We are providing the food, pet supplies and support, and participants will provide the love."

The week-long event with take place between November 18-25 and while the situation is only temporary, it will have long-term benefits on the pups, helping in lowering their stress, socializing them and providing more information for their potential adopters.

A recent study funded by Maddie's Fund, an organisation that helps shelters become no-kill found that even one night out of a shelter and in a home will reduce a dog's cortisol levels, or stress hormones.

Hirsch is eagerly waiting for the shelter's dogs to go off for their Thanksgiving vacations and for the adorable holiday photographs to pour in.

"We are very excited to see them leave the shelter and spend Thanksgiving with a family," Hirsch said to TODAY.
