Students go back to nature via Prakrithi Paadam' in Kozhikode

Sessions provide unique experience to tech-obsessed new gen kids

KOZHIKODE: The students here have an opportunity to go back to nature through the ‘Prakrithi Paadam’ organised at the Regional Science Centre & Planetarium on Tuesday and Wednesday. They can learn about the rare and interesting facts about animals, the long-forgotten names of plants around us and the science behind the chirping of birds.

The sessions initiated by Malabar Natural History Society provide a unique experience to the tech-obsessed new generation kids. According Mr K.M. Sunil, education officer at the Regional Science Centre, the children could take two days’ off from the mobile phones and electronic gadgets and discover the delights of nature.

As many as 46 high students from various schools in Kozhikode, who are attending the programme, will receive sessions from experts and environmentalists like Dr Jafer Palot. The students will be made aware of the floral diversity of Kerala, common birds and animals and the importance of preserving them.

“The idea behind the programme is to provide an insight to the children into mother nature. Once they are aware, they’ll give serious consideration to nature as they grow up,” added Mr Sunil. As the sessions are informal, children can interact with the experts and the session proceeds through Discussions.

“India is rich in biodiversity and has many ecologically sensitive areas. Hence it is important to make our children aware about nature. That is the significance of this seminar,” opined Mr V.S. Ramachandran, director of Regional Science Centre & Planetarium.
