Bengaluru: There is a solution to the drought in large parts of the country and the state, believes Conservator of forests, Jaganmohan Sharma from the land acquisition and forest cell of the state's water resources department. Calling for the creation of more green space, he pointed out here on Friday that greater forest cover will likely lead to more rainfall and emphasised the need to improve management of water as well.
The officer was speaking at the Earth Day celebrations of Bengaluru University’s Department of Geography. Saplings were planted and plants watered on the campus as part of the event.
In other parts of the city, Chai Point, a tea retail chain, acted on its concern for the loss of green cover in Bengaluru and distributed over 2000 free saplings to its customers as part of its ‘Take Home A Sapling’ initiative. The Trio World Academy, meanwhile, turned off electricity in its classrooms for an hour to demonstrate the need to preserve the world’s natural resources for future generations.
Electric vehicle cab company, Lithium, which has already clocked two million kilometers over the past six months and reduced carbon footprints upto 11 tonnes, used the occasion to create more awareness about the use of electric vehicles in the city. Rangoli Metro Art Centre on M G Road marked the day by screening a documentary film, "Wrestlers Of Western Ghats," and holding a panel discussion and interaction with the audience on "Convergence of science and art". The organisers also displayed thematic greeting cards designed by children at the art centre.
ICAT, a design and media college, organised a ‘Green Carnival 2016.’ As many as 197 countries, including India, marked the 50th anniversary of the World Earth Day celebration on Friday. The Earth Day Network, the largest environmental movement working in several countries to build environmental democracy, has declared ‘Trees for the Earth’ as the theme for this year's celebration. The Earth Day Network has set a goal of planting 7.8 billion trees over the next five years.
