Kerala: Pollution Control Board to do daily checks on Sabari waters
Kochi: The Pollution Control Board (PCB) has initiated testing samples of all possible drinking water sources in and around Sabarimala and publish the results on a daily basis for the benefit of thousands of pilgrims visiting the holy shrine.
“Usually we collect a few samples. However, this pilgrimage season samples are taken from all possible drinking water sources, including the seven RO plants set up by the Kerala Water Authority, two by the Travancore Devaswom Board and those donated by pilgrims,” said K. Sajeevan, the PCB chief.
Also, samples of treated water from new sewage treatment plant at Sannidhanam, two points at Bhasmakulam and five points at bathing ghats in Pamba are being inspected every day.
“Upon finding a high level of coliform bacteria, we immediately alert the KWA and TDB officials and ask them to take remedial measures such as imposing restrictions on waste disposal. Also for the benefit of pilgrims, we’ll display test results at our camp offices in Pamba and Sannidhanam on a daily basis,” he said.
This time around, there is a complete ban on carrying mineral water bottles while trekking. The KWA is in the process of setting up seven RO plants, four already functional, to provide drinking water to pilgrims for free along the five km trekking path.
The PCB has increased the strength of its staff deputed at Pamba and Sannidhanam compared to last season. “Now a 15-member squad that includes lab scientists is deployed at each camp office,” he said.
