Madhya Pradesh: Baby dog saves sick pug's life

Doctors drew 100 ml blood from the German shepherd and admitted it in the ailing pug.

Bhopal: A baby dog of German shepherd species has saved the life of a critically ill pug by giving its blood in a veterinary hospital at Itarsi nearly 80 km from here on Monday.

Doctors in the district veterinary hospital at Itarsi had to undertake the blood transfusion to save the puppy despite lack of facilities for matching blood groups of donor and recipient in the hospital.

“We had to take risk of adopting the method of matching RBCs in the blood of the donor and the recipient to give blood to the pug to save its life despite having no facility of veterinary blood group matching in the hospital,” doctors said.

According to veterinary surgeon Sailendra Tema, the blood of the German shepherd was chosen out of five dogs when its RBC sample matched with that of the pug.

The RBC in the pug, which caught infection, had come down from 13 percent to mere 4 percent in the blood. It was facing difficulty in breathing. Doctors drew 100 ml blood from the German shepherd and admitted it in the ailing pug.
