Much more than snob value
Pet saloons and pets spas are no longer just status symbols for the elite to show off. Today, the pet spa has become an essential part of bringing up a pet among most pet parents. But, a few points need to be kept in mind when considering to take your pet out for a little indulgence.
Professional pet trainer, Dharmesh T. Ramakrishna, who runs a pet day care ‘The Royal Kennels’ and has opened the first pet spa in Kozhikode, points out that there are many pet parents who are struggling when it comes to giving their pets proper care.
“Breeds such as Shih Tzu, Maltese terrier, Russian poodle and Lhasa Apso are some of those breeds that need utmost care when it comes to keeping them well groomed and clean,” he says.
He suggests two golden rules for pet owners. “Do not wait till the dog’s coat becomes matted to bring them to the spa. Try and make the spa visits a regular part of bringing up a pet. The second and the most important point is, it is always easier when the dog is trained. The more socialised the dog, the better.”
While a regular grooming session which includes nail grinding, coat trimming and a good long bath can take up to three to four hours, some pet parents demand more than just grooming, so it could take up to six hours.
“The dog must be patient enough to sit through, which is why training is recommended. In rare cases, an aggressive dog is sedated in the presence of a veterinary physician with the permission of the owner for grooming.”
