NGT upset by Agara lake buffer zone violations
Bengaluru: The National Green Tribunal (NGT), New Delhi on Saturday served notices to the BBMP and Bescom for violating its May 2016 order on lake buffer zones after the counsel for Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF) told the bench that new constructions are coming up around the lake and approval for these constructions were issued by the BBMP and Bescom. The NGT posted the matter for next hearing on Jan 4, 2018.
As per the guidelines issued by the NGT, no construction should be undertaken in the buffer zone, which is 75 metres from the lake boundary. However, the wetlands of the Agara-Bellandur have been encroached by powerful builders, the counsel argued.
The NBF supported by Forward Foundation had filed the application before the NGT, alleging encroachment in the eco-sensitive zone between Agara and Bellandur Lake, after which the tribunal in May 2016 had ordered the illegal structures in the wetlands be demolished.
