Sahara owner Subrata Roy's pet chimp enjoys a royal life at Hyderabad zoo

A zoo official said Suzi was raised as a pet animal and was brought to the zoo when she was 12-15 years old.

Hyderabad: Suzi, a chimpanzee at a the Nehru Zoological park once owned by Sahara Group chairman Subrata Roy is having it good.

The female chimpanzee is known for her tantrums. In 2013 she escaped from the enclosure as she had problems with her mate Jimmy. They dislike each other so much that the zoo officials have had to put them in separate cages at night.

A zoo official said Suzi was raised as a pet animal and was brought to the zoo when she was 12-15 years old. By that time, she was used to a rich diet and the zoo did not want to change that.

Her food habits are different: She loves coffee, coconut milk and fresh fruit juice. “The zoo continues to give Suzi the same diet as we are concerned about her health and want her to survive for a long time. Suzi insists that she must get what she wants. The budget for her food is slight more than other animals,” he said.

According to the official, Suzi starts her day by brushing her teeth. The ‘brand conscious’ chimp insists on using Pepsodent.

This is followed by a lavish bath with shampoo and Pears soap. Coconut oil is applied on her body by the zoo staff. Suzi drinks some coffee. She prefers Nescafe but doesn't mind the occasional mug of Complan as a health drink. The beverage is followed by a breakfast that includes bread with fruit jam and raw fruits, the official said.

Lunch includes honey, fruits, cornflakes, dry fruits and nuts. Suzi also loves Cadbury’s chocolates. The chimpanzee is so fussy that she only drinks mineral water and that too in her own bottle. Zoo authorities provide her fresh blankets daily, and she can easily make out a used one. Suzi gets a cooler during summer, and mosquito repellent is provided to her.
